    How This Calculator Works

This EV vs Gas cost calculator compares the total cost of ownership (TCO) of an electric vehicle and a gas car in Canada over your chosen ownership period. It factors in the purchase price, fuel or charging costs, annual registration fees, insurance, regular servicing, tire replacement, and depreciation — all pre-filled with current Canadian rates that you can adjust to match your exact situation.

    Canadian Registration & Fees Used

    Annual Vehicle Registration Fee

All vehicle types (gas or EV)~$100–$150/yr
    Default used in calculator~$130/yr

Canada has no engine-CC or motor-kW based road tax. All vehicles pay a flat provincial registration fee regardless of powertrain.

Federal EV Incentive (EVAP Program — as of Feb 2026)

    Battery Electric (BEV) ≤ $50,000Up to $5,000
    Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) ≤ $50,000Up to $2,500
    Additional provincial rebatesvaries

The federal EVAP program (replaced iZEV in Feb 2026) offers up to $5,000 off eligible new BEVs priced at or below $50,000. BC stacks an additional rebate of up to $4,000 through the CleanBC Go Electric program.

    Insurance Rates Used

Canadian auto insurance rates are not set by a single national tariff — they vary by province, driver history, vehicle make/model, and coverage level. The calculator uses $2,289/yr for gas cars and $3,131/yr for EVs — the 2026 national averages per Surex/BeInsure data. EVs cost more to insure due to higher repair costs (~$7,026/repair for BEVs vs ~$5,345 for gas cars).

Provinces with public auto insurance (BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec) tend to have lower rates than those with private insurers. Adjust the insurance fields in the calculator to match your actual premiums.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to own an EV or gas car in Canada?

At April 2026 rates ($1.90/L gas, $0.16/kWh electricity), EVs save ~$2,000–$2,500/yr on fuel at 15,000 km/yr. Over 5 years, fuel savings alone total ~$10,000–$12,500. Lower EV maintenance (no oil changes, timing belts, spark plugs) adds another ~$5,000 in savings. Partially offsetting this: EVs cost ~$800–$1,000 more/yr to insure, and depreciate faster than gas cars. The $5,000 federal EVAP rebate reduces the purchase premium. Net advantage depends on your province, driving habits, and whether you include depreciation.

What is the current gas price in Canada (2026)?

As of April 16, 2026, the national average is approximately CAD 1.75/litre — down from ~$1.98/L on April 14 after PM Carney suspended the federal fuel excise tax (saving ~10¢/L until Sep 7, 2026). Summer blend switchover added ~10¢/L in mid-April. Prices vary by province — typically lower in Alberta (~$1.55/L) and higher in Ontario and Atlantic Canada (~$1.85/L).

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in Canada?

Home charging costs $0.08–$0.19/kWh depending on your province (national average ~$0.16/kWh). Quebec is cheapest at ~$0.08/kWh; Nova Scotia is highest at ~$0.19/kWh. A full charge for a mid-range EV (e.g. 60 kWh battery) costs approximately $5–$11 at home and gives 350–450 km of range. Public DC fast charging costs $0.25–$0.45/kWh.

What fees do EVs pay in Canada?

Canada does not have an annual road tax. EVs pay the same provincial registration fee as gas cars — approximately $100–$150/yr. The federal iZEV program offers up to $5,000 off the purchase price of eligible new EVs. BC offers an additional rebate of up to $4,000 through the CleanBC Go Electric program, stackable with the federal rebate.

What insurance do EVs need in Canada?

All vehicles in Canada require liability insurance (mandatory). Comprehensive and collision coverage are optional but widely recommended. The 2026 national average is ~$2,289/yr for gas cars and ~$3,131/yr for EVs — EVs cost roughly 37% more to insure due to higher repair costs and specialized parts. Rates vary significantly by province; BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec have government-run auto insurance with generally lower rates.

How much does EV battery replacement cost in Canada?

EV battery replacement in Canada typically costs CAD $8,000–$20,000 depending on the vehicle and battery size. Most manufacturers offer an 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty. Battery costs are decreasing annually as technology improves.

Calculations are estimates based on April 2026 Canadian averages (gas ~CAD 1.75/L post-excise-suspension, electricity ~$0.16/kWh, registration ~$130/yr, insurance ~$2,289/yr gas / $3,131/yr EV). EV price includes $5,000 EVAP federal rebate. Rates vary by province. Sources: GasBuddy/CAA, NRCan, Surex/BeInsure, Canadian Black Book.

    Canada-Specific Insights
    • EVAP Rebate (Feb 2026): Federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program — up to $5,000 off eligible BEVs ≤ $50,000 at point of sale. Replaces iZEV. BC ($4,000), Quebec ($7,000) & Ontario stack additional provincial rebates.
    • Registration: Canada has no engine-CC road tax. All vehicles pay a flat provincial registration fee (~$100–$150/yr). EV price above includes the $5,000 federal rebate already applied.
    • Insurance: National avg (2026): $2,289/yr for gas vs $3,131/yr for EVs — EVs cost ~37% more to insure due to higher repair costs ($7,026/repair BEV vs $5,345 gas). Public insurance (ICBC in BC, SAAQ in QC, SGI in SK, MPI in MB) vs private (Ontario, Alberta, Maritimes).
    • Carbon Tax / Fuel Charge: Federal fuel charge (or provincial equivalent) adds ~14¢/L to gas prices in 2026 and is set to rise annually — sharpens EV operating-cost advantage over the ownership window.
    • Electricity: Provincial hydro authority rates ($0.10–$0.18/kWh). BC Hydro and Hydro-Québec rank among the lowest in North America; Alberta/Ontario time-of-use tariffs reward overnight charging.
    • Fuel vs Electricity: At $1.75/L gas and $0.16/kWh electricity, EVs cost ~$0.06/km vs ~$0.16/km for gas — roughly 2.5–3x cheaper per km. Savings grow if gas prices rise.
    • Servicing: EV servicing ~$0–$450/yr (vs $1,200 for gas). No oil changes, timing belts, spark plugs, or exhaust system. Most brands offer 2–3 years free servicing.
    • Battery Warranty: 8 years / 160,000 km typical. Replacement CAD $8,000–$20,000. Battery costs are falling ~15%/yr as technology matures.
