Aptera, a California-based startup, has been making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) industry with its innovative 3-wheeled solar EV. As a Canadian audience, we're interested in learning more about this company and its progress towards bringing its vehicle to market, including its potential availability and pricing in Canada. With the Canadian government's iZEV incentives and various provincial rebates, there's a growing demand for eco-friendly transportation options in the Great White North.
During a recent tour of Aptera's 77,000 square foot headquarters in Carlsbad, California, we got a glimpse into the company's progress and challenges. The facility is where Aptera plans to do final assembly of its vehicles, which will feature a sleek design and advanced technology, including a solar-boosted powertrain. As we walked through the factory, we saw various prototypes on display, showcasing the iterations the company has gone through in developing the vehicle. With its unique suspension design and aerodynamic features, the Aptera is designed to be highly efficient, with a range of up to 700 kilometre on a single charge.
Aptera's body components are made of carbon fibre sheet moulding compound (CF-SMC), produced in partnership with CPC Group in Italy. This material is stronger and more expensive than traditional fiberglass, but can be moulded into any shape with minimal labour. The pieces are made in Italy and shipped to Aptera's facility, where they are glued together. The company's parts department is relatively small, with only around 130 parts in the entire vehicle. Aptera is focused on efficiency, using a Snapdragon 845 ARM processor for its ADAS tasks, which only uses 9 watts of power, and LIN instead of CAN for network communication within the car, saving both power and cost.
While Aptera's vehicle is not yet available in Canada, the company is working towards bringing its product to the global market. With the Canadian government's iZEV incentives and provincial rebates, such as those offered in British Columbia and Quebec, there's a growing demand for eco-friendly transportation options in Canada. Aptera's vehicle could be an attractive option for Canadian consumers, with its advanced technology and eco-friendly design. However, Canadian pricing and availability have not been announced, and it's unclear when the vehicle will be available in the Canadian market.
Aptera's openness and transparency during the tour were impressive, with nothing seeming particularly staged or hidden. The company's focus on efficiency and innovation is evident in its design and manufacturing process. As the EV industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Aptera's unique approach to solar-powered transportation will fare in the Canadian market. With its advanced technology and eco-friendly design, the Aptera could be a game-changer in the Canadian EV market, and we look forward to seeing its progress in the coming years.
