The highly anticipated new BMW i3 is set to arrive sooner than expected, with orders already open in several markets, including Germany and the UK. This comes after the company received "high levels" of early interest in the electric sedan. Although the i3 was initially expected to go on sale later this year, BMW has decided to give buyers early access, with the i3 50 xDrive "First Edition" model available to order now.
In Germany, the i3 50 xDrive "First Edition" model starts at €75,340, which is approximately $108,000 CAD, considering current exchange rates. The base model is priced from €65,900, roughly $94,000 CAD. Both models come equipped with a 108.7 kWh battery, providing a WLTP range of up to 566 miles (912 km). The First Edition model boasts added features, including BMW's new Iconic Glow, 3D Head-Up Display, and an upgraded 22 kW AC Charging Professional. Canadian pricing has not been announced yet, but it is expected to be competitive, potentially qualifying for the iZEV incentive and provincial rebates.
While there is no official word on Canadian availability, the new i3 is expected to arrive in the country later this year, with deliveries likely to begin in the fall. As with other BMW models, Canadian pricing will be announced closer to the launch date. The i3 is expected to be eligible for the Canadian federal iZEV incentive, which offers up to $5,000 off the purchase price of eligible electric vehicles. Additionally, some provinces, such as British Columbia and Quebec, offer their own rebates, which could further reduce the cost of the new i3 for Canadian buyers.
The i3 50 xDrive features an 800V architecture, allowing it to regain nearly 250 miles (400 km) of range in about 10 minutes at DC fast-charging speeds up to 400 kW. This makes it an attractive option for those who need to charge their vehicle quickly, especially on long road trips. With its impressive range and fast-charging capabilities, the new i3 is well-suited for Canadian drivers, who often need to travel long distances.
The new i3 is generating strong interest globally, particularly in China, where BMW has faced stiff competition from domestic brands. The i3 is BMW's second Neue Klasse model, following the iX3 SUV, which has already seen significant success, with over 10,000 units sold in its first month of deliveries. As the Canadian electric vehicle market continues to grow, the new i3 is poised to be a strong contender, offering a unique blend of style, performance, and sustainability.
