Rivian has achieved a significant milestone in the electric vehicle (EV) market by matching Tesla's efficiency with its new R2 Performance model. According to the official EPA rating, the 2027 Rivian R2 Performance is as efficient as the 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance, despite being heavier, taller, and wider. This feat is particularly impressive given the Canadian context, where EV efficiency is crucial for navigating the country's vast distances and varying climate conditions.
The EPA's numbers indicate that the 2027 Rivian R2 Performance with 21-inch wheels can drive up to 330 miles on a full charge, with an average energy consumption of 32 kilowatt-hours/100 miles (3.12 miles/kilowatt-hour). In comparison, the 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance can deliver up to 306 miles of range with an identical energy consumption. The Rivian R2 Performance is powered by an 87.9 kWh high-voltage pack, while the Tesla Model Y Performance features an 81 kWh battery. Canadian buyers can expect to pay a premium for these high-performance EVs, but may be eligible for incentives such as the iZEV program, which offers up to $5,000 in rebates for eligible vehicles.
The Rivian R2 Performance weighs approximately 5,000 pounds, roughly 500 pounds more than the Tesla Model Y Performance. Additionally, the R2 has a higher ground clearance of 9.6 inches, compared to the Model Y's 6 inches. Despite these size and weight disadvantages, the R2 Performance has achieved impressive efficiency ratings, making it an attractive option for Canadian buyers who prioritize both performance and environmental sustainability. Provincial rebates, such as those offered in British Columbia and Quebec, may also be available to help offset the cost of purchasing an EV.
The Rivian R2 Performance boasts a dual-motor setup with 656 horsepower, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds. In contrast, the Tesla Model Y Performance has a dual-motor setup with 510 horsepower, reaching 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds. The R2 Performance is expected to be available in Canada, with a starting price that has not been officially announced. However, Canadian buyers can expect to pay a premium for this high-performance EV, potentially in the range of $100,000 to $150,000, depending on the trim level and options chosen. A cheaper, rear-wheel drive version of the R2 is slated for release in late 2027, which may be more accessible to Canadian buyers, with a potential price point under $80,000.
