The highly anticipated BMW i3 electric sedan is set to open orders in Germany as early as this week, months ahead of its scheduled fall release, due to exceptionally strong demand. Although the production schedule remains unchanged, with production at the Munich plant still slated to begin in August, BMW has decided to capitalize on the excitement surrounding its newest electric vehicle. This move is likely to generate significant interest in the Canadian market as well, where buyers can look forward to taking advantage of federal iZEV incentives and provincial rebates, such as those offered in British Columbia and Quebec.
The BMW i3 boasts an impressive estimated driving range of up to 559 miles (900 km) under WLTP conditions, thanks to its sixth-gen eDrive (Gen6) with an 800-volt electric architecture. With the capability for up to 400 kW DC fast charging, the electric sedan can regain nearly 250 miles (400 km) of range in just 10 minutes. The i3 also features a massive 43″ Panoramic Vision display and a 17.9″ floating central infotainment display, similar to the iX3 SUV. Canadian buyers can expect to see similar features and capabilities when the i3 becomes available in the Canadian market, with pricing likely to be competitive with other electric vehicles in its class.
While official Canadian pricing for the BMW i3 has not been announced, it is expected to start at around $50,000 to $55,000, given the pricing of the iX3 50 xDrive, which starts at $61,500. An entry-level single-motor variant may also be added to the lineup, similar to the recently launched iX3 40. As with other electric vehicles, Canadian buyers can expect to be eligible for the federal iZEV incentive of up to $5,000, as well as provincial rebates, such as the British Columbia SCRAP-IT program or the Quebec Roulez Vert program. The i3 is expected to be available at BMW dealerships across Canada, with deliveries scheduled to begin this fall.
The BMW i3 is generating significant buzz not only in its home market but also in China, where it will be available in a long-wheelbase variant. With its impressive range, features, and expected competitive pricing, the i3 is poised to make a significant impact in the Canadian electric vehicle market. As the Canadian government continues to incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles, the i3 is likely to be a popular choice among Canadian buyers looking for a stylish, feature-packed, and environmentally friendly vehicle.
