General Motors (GM) is set to launch a new version of its dedicated electric vehicle platform near the end of 2028, with the Chevy Equinox EV being the first model to utilize this advanced technology. The current Chevy Equinox EV is a top seller for GM in the US, but with new models like the 2026 Toyota bZ and Hyundai IONIQ 5 entering the market, an upgrade is timely. Canadian buyers can currently take advantage of the federal iZEV incentive, which offers up to $5,000 in rebates for eligible electric vehicles, including the Chevy Equinox EV.
The existing BEV3 architecture supports a range of GM vehicles, including the Chevy Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and others, both in the US and overseas markets. The 2023 Cadillac Lyriq was the first to use this third-generation EV architecture, incorporating GM's Ultium batteries and drive motors. This platform has enabled GM to offer a wide range of vehicles with support for all-wheel drive (AWD), front-wheel drive (FWD), and rear-wheel drive (RWD) configurations, catering to diverse consumer needs in the Canadian market.
According to reports, GM is working on the next evolution of its dedicated EV platform, codenamed BEV-N internally. The Chevy Equinox EV is expected to be the first model to arrive on this platform in late 2028 or early 2029, followed by the Chevy Blazer EV. This new platform is anticipated to offer improved efficiency, faster charging speeds, and an advanced software stack for enhanced safety and convenience features. For Canadian buyers, this could mean even more kilometres on a single charge, potentially exceeding the current EPA-estimated range of up to 512 kilometres for FWD models and 493 kilometres for AWD models.
The new platform is likely to support advanced technologies, including eyes-off self-driving on highways, a feature that GM plans to introduce in the Cadillac Escalade IQ starting in 2028. GM has begun testing this automated self-driving technology under supervised conditions and aims to have a fleet of over 200 self-driving and supervised test vehicles on the road. As these technologies become available in the Canadian market, they will be subject to Canadian regulations and safety standards, ensuring they meet the high expectations of Canadian consumers.
While details on Canadian pricing and availability of the new Chevy Equinox EV on the BEV-N platform are not yet available, buyers can expect the model to be competitively priced with other electric vehicles in the Canadian market. Additionally, the federal iZEV incentive and provincial rebates, such as those offered in British Columbia and Quebec, may still be applicable, making electric vehicles an even more attractive option for environmentally conscious Canadian consumers. For those interested in exploring current models, Chevy Equinox EVs can be found at dealerships across Canada, with pricing starting at around $40,000 before incentives.
