Canadian electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts will be thrilled to learn that BMW is accelerating the launch of its highly anticipated i3 electric sedan. Following strong demand for the iX3 electric SUV, the German automaker is opening order books for the i3 much earlier than expected, with a "1st Edition" model available for pre-order in Germany this week. Although Canadian pricing and availability have not been announced, it is likely that the i3 will qualify for the Canadian government's iZEV incentive program, which offers a rebate of up to $5,000 for eligible EV purchases.
The BMW i3 50 xDrive will boast an estimated range of approximately 708 kilometres, based on preliminary testing using the EPA procedure. This impressive range is made possible by the next-generation 800-volt powertrain and cylindrical battery cells developed by BMW. The i3 will deliver a total of 469 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque, courtesy of two electric motors, making it a compelling option for Canadian drivers who value performance and sustainability. Additionally, the i3 will be eligible for provincial rebates, such as those offered in British Columbia and Quebec, which can provide further incentives for Canadian buyers.
The i3 will come standard with vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing owners to export energy from the high-voltage pack to power appliances, tools, and electronics. The maximum output through the charge port is capped at 3.7 kW. While Canadian pricing has not been announced, it is expected that the i3 will be competitively priced with other luxury EVs in the Canadian market. The i3 is expected to be available at Canadian BMW centres in the near future, although an exact launch date has not been confirmed.
European production of the i3 will commence in August at BMW's historic plant in Munich, Germany. U.S. sales are slated to begin in 2027, although it is unclear when the i3 will arrive in the Canadian market. As with other BMW models, the i3 is expected to be available at BMW centres across Canada, offering Canadian drivers a unique blend of performance, luxury, and sustainability. With its impressive range, advanced features, and competitive pricing, the BMW i3 is poised to be a top contender in the Canadian EV market.
