Hyundai has recently provided its first real-life glimpse of the new IONIQ EV, following the unveiling of the Venus and Earth concepts. Although these vehicles are set to debut in China, Canadians may find the advancements and design philosophies relevant as Hyundai continues to innovate within the electric vehicle (EV) market.
Hyundai is launching its IONIQ EV brand in China, aiming to compete with leaders like BYD. The new IONIQ EVs will differentiate themselves from models such as the IONIQ 5 with a unique style, cutting-edge software, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) tailored for Chinese consumers. However, Canadians can anticipate similar technological advancements trickling down to future models available in this market.
The Earth and Venus concepts—introduced last week—will lead the IONIQ EV brand’s entry into China. Ahead of the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, Hyundai revealed these new additions to its electric vehicle lineup. The Earth is described as a “dependable family SUV,” whereas the Venus is a “trend-setting sedan.” Although these are just concepts, Li Fenggang, president of Beijing Hyundai, assured that production models will soon offer the smart driving and smart cabin features Chinese consumers desire. Canadian drivers may also benefit from these advancements in the future.
Both EV concepts embody Hyundai’s new ethos of “Lead, don’t follow,” featuring a distinctive “single-curve silhouette” that sets them apart from other IONIQ models like the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9, which are sold globally.
A Venus prototype was spotted in public for the first time, and despite being covered, spy images from Autohome indicate that the design closely resembles the concept. The slim LED headlights, connected by a light bar stretching across the front, contribute to its futuristic and modern appearance.
Hyundai states that the electric sedan, Venus, draws inspiration from the “brightest planet’s timeless beauty.” Future IONIQ EVs in China will be named after planets, symbolising that each vehicle “orbits” around the driver. This planetary theme may eventually extend to models available in Canada.
These new IONIQ EVs will likely incorporate Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect, an advanced end-to-end software platform. This Android-based system provides a smartphone-like user interface, similar to Tesla’s interface, enhancing the driving experience with advanced connectivity.
More details about the Earth and Venus EV models will emerge on April 24 during Hyundai’s press conference at the Beijing Auto Show, where the company will outline its strategy to dominate the world’s largest EV market.
Canadian Context: While these models are initially targeted for the Chinese market, Canadians can benefit from watching Hyundai’s innovations. Future IONIQ models available in Canada may incorporate similar advancements. Additionally, Canadian EV buyers can take advantage of various incentives, such as the iZEV program, provincial rebates, and other financial supports designed to make going electric more affordable.
Stay tuned for updates that may impact the Canadian EV landscape!
