Kia is gearing up to introduce the highly anticipated EV3, an affordable electric SUV, to the Canadian market later this year. The first prototypes are currently being produced at Kia’s manufacturing plant in Mexico, with 15 EV3 units rolled out last month from the Pesquería plant in Nuevo León. These prototypes are expected to be the initial test vehicles, some of which have already been spotted on public roads.
As Kia ramps up production in Mexico, local reports indicate that the company is maintaining a low profile, especially with the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) joint review scheduled for July. This strategic approach underscores Kia’s commitment to ensuring smooth operations and compliance across North America.
The EV3 hit the European market in November 2024 and quickly became a sensation. The compact electric SUV boasts a segment-leading range of up to 600 kilometres and an affordable starting price of approximately $44,000 CAD, which includes the Canadian Federal Incentive for ZEVs (iZEV). In its debut year, the EV3 secured the title of the third-best-selling EV in the UK and ranked among the top 10 in Europe and other markets like Australia.
During the New York Auto Show, Kia confirmed that the EV3 will indeed launch in the US later this year, alleviating concerns that the model might be cancelled following the indefinite delay of the EV4. At the event, the EV3 made its North American debut, with Kia describing it as an “entry-level EV SUV that offers many of the advanced amenities of the EV9” in a more compact design.
The EV3 will be offered in five trims: Light, Wind, Land, GT-Line, and a flagship GT variant. The base Light model features a 58.3 kWh battery and a front-mounted electric motor, providing an estimated range of up to 350 kilometres.
The Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT trims come with an extended-range 81.4 kWh battery, offering an estimated range of up to 510 kilometres in front-wheel-drive models. All-wheel drive is optional for the Wind and Land trims and standard on the GT-Line and GT variants.
Powered by the 400V E-GMP platform, the EV3 Light with the 58.3 kWh battery can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes. The 81.4 kWh battery model requires about 31 minutes for the same charge level.
Although specific pricing details will be revealed closer to the launch, the EV3 is anticipated to start around $38,000 CAD before incentives, positioning it below the EV6 in Kia’s Canadian lineup. The 2026 Kia EV6 currently starts at $52,000 CAD before incentives.
If priced at or under $38,000 CAD, the Kia EV3 will compete among the most affordable EVs in Canada, alongside models like the new Nissan LEAF, Chevy Bolt EV, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Toyota bZ.
Despite a dip in EV sales in the first quarter due to policy changes, affordable electric SUVs like the Toyota bZ, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Chevy Equinox EV have remained popular in North America. In the US, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 continue to lead sales, followed by the Toyota bZ, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Chevy Equinox EV.
The success of the EV3 in Europe and other global markets has set high expectations for its North American launch. If Kia delivers on its promise of affordability and performance, the EV3 could become a game-changer in the Canadian electric SUV market.
