Nissan has just unveiled the NX8, an electric SUV that sets a new benchmark in the EV market, making models like the Rogue seem outdated. This mid- to large-sized electric SUV has already garnered significant attention, securing close to 8,500 orders within just 30 minutes of its pre-order launch.
Measuring 4,870 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,680 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,917 mm, the NX8 surpasses both the Rogue and Ariya in size. It is Nissan’s first SUV and second EV built on Dongfeng’s advanced platforms, incorporating electric drive, vehicle control units, and intelligent in-vehicle systems.
The NX8 is constructed on the Tianyan Architecture 2.0, an 800V platform capable of 5C ultra-fast charging. It offers two powertrain options: fully electric (EV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV).
The EV version is powered by an 81 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL, providing a CLTC range of up to 650 km. It features a single electric motor available in two power outputs: 288 hp (215 kW) or 335 hp (250 kW). With a charging speed of up to 463 kW, the NX8 can go from 10% to 80% charge in just 12 minutes.
The EREV variant utilizes a smaller LFP battery, a single 335 hp (250 kW) electric motor, and a 1.5T gas engine, delivering up to 310 km of pure electric range. When combined with the gas engine, the EREV can travel up to 1,450 km.
The interior of the NX8 boasts a sleek, minimalist design with a dual 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a separate 10.25-inch driver cluster, and an impressive 62-inch AR head-up display (HUD). Equipped with a roof-mounted LiDAR and 29 sensors, the NX8 offers advanced smart driving features such as Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) for both city and highway navigation, as well as full-scenario intelligent parking assistance.
The NX8 is offered in three EV trims and three EREV grades. Initial prices range from 149,900 yuan (approximately $22,000 CAD) to 209,900 yuan (approximately $30,800 CAD). After the launch of the EV models on April 8, Dongfeng Nissan reported 8,423 orders in the first 30 minutes. Deliveries of the EREV variant are expected to begin in May.
While the NX8 is currently a product of Nissan’s joint venture in China, Dongfeng Nissan, there is potential for this electric SUV to reach overseas markets, including Canada. If introduced, Canadian drivers could benefit from provincial rebates and the iZEV incentive program, making this advanced EV even more accessible.
As the electric vehicle market in Canada continues to grow, the Nissan NX8 could be a significant addition, offering impressive range, cutting-edge technology, and robust performance. Stay tuned for updates on its potential availability in Canada.
