A significant order has been placed by Wibax, a bulk transport expert, with Swedish truck brand Scania, for over 100 battery-electric semi trucks to operate on European roads. This landmark deal is the largest single sales of electric trucks for bulk transport in the EU to date. Although this development is taking place in Europe, it highlights the growing trend towards electrification of transportation, which is also relevant in the Canadian context. With the Canadian government's iZEV incentives and various provincial rebates, such as those offered in British Columbia and Quebec, Canadian companies may also consider transitioning to electric trucks for their operations.
The partnership between Wibax and Scania reflects their shared belief in the benefits of an electric truck fleet for sustainable, reliable, and affordable operations. According to Jonas Wiklund, CEO of Wibax Group, the company aims to electrify its fleet quickly, and with Scania, they can introduce new technology rapidly to achieve their electrification goals. This approach could be applied to Canadian companies as well, particularly those with relatively short and repetitive transport routes, where electrification could be more effective. Canadian companies can also take advantage of the Canadian pricing for electric trucks and the available incentives to make their operations more environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
Scania views this deal as a significant step forward for electrification in the EU, hoping it will inspire other transport companies to consider going electric. The company has been working with Wibax since 2022, when they began operating a three-axle Scania tractor-trailer combination on an 80 kilometre route in northern Sweden. Although the results of the pilot were not disclosed, the large follow-up order suggests a successful partnership. As the Canadian government and provinces continue to invest in electric vehicle infrastructure and offer incentives, Canadian transport companies may also explore electrification options, potentially leading to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs over time.
Tobias Ejderhamn, Head of Global Sales, e-truck solutions at Scania, sees this large deal as proof of Wibax's confidence in Scania as a trusted partner for scaling up eMobility operations. For Scania, this deal underlines the strategic opportunity that battery-electric vehicles represent for customers, particularly in terms of future-proofing fleets to meet developing emissions standards. In the Canadian context, this means that fleet operators can prepare for upcoming emissions regulations and reduce their environmental footprint by considering electric truck options, which can travel long distances, such as over 500 kilometres, on a single charge, making them suitable for various transport applications across the country.
