The Chevrolet Equinox EV, touted as America's most affordable electric vehicle with a range of over 500 kilometres, has seen a significant increase in leasing costs this month. Canadian consumers can expect to pay more for this model, with the base FWD LT1 trim now costing $554 per month for a 39-month lease, compared to $362 per month in April. This change may impact the appeal of the Equinox EV to Canadian buyers, who may be eligible for the iZEV incentive programme and provincial rebates, such as those offered in British Columbia and Quebec.
In contrast, the new 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is now cheaper to lease, especially for Costco members who can take advantage of a $1,000 incentive. With a starting price of around $30,000 CAD, the Bolt offers a range of up to 420 kilometres and is available for lease at $411 per month for 39 months. Canadian pricing for the Equinox EV starts at around $46,000 CAD, with a range of up to 513 kilometres. The Hyundai IONIQ 5, meanwhile, is available for lease at $425 per month for 24 months, with a standard-range model offering up to 394 kilometres of range. Canadian buyers may also be interested in the Tesla Model Y, which is available for lease at $459 per month for 36 months.
The Equinox EV boasts a larger interior space, with up to 2.7 cubic metres of total passenger volume, as well as a longer driving range and more power. It also features a 44.7-centimetre touchscreen infotainment system, the largest in its class. The Bolt, on the other hand, has a smaller 28.6-centimetre display and is only available with a front-wheel-drive powertrain. Canadian buyers may need to consider these factors when choosing between the two models, taking into account their specific needs and preferences. Additionally, the Canadian government's iZEV programme offers a rebate of up to $5,000 for eligible electric vehicles, which may impact the overall cost of ownership. Provincial rebates, such as those offered in Ontario and British Columbia, may also be available to further reduce the cost of purchasing or leasing an EV.
